Off the clock
Life, and all the bits in between
Code pays the bills and photography fills the weekends, but there’s more to it than that. This is the rest of it.
Business & networking
Running things, meeting people, and passing on what I’ve learned.
I’ve run businesses for a good part of my working life, and spent a fair bit of it in rooms full of other people running theirs. Networking groups like BNI have taught me more than any course: how to explain what you do in a sentence, how to ask for help, and how much a good referral is worth.
If you’re starting out and want to talk something through, I’m happy to.
Outdoors & wildlife
Coastline, islands, hills, and whatever lives on them.
Most of my favourite frames were taken outside, a long way from a desk. Wales makes that easy: the coast, the valleys, and places like Skomer Island off Pembrokeshire, which is exactly the kind of trip I save my weekends for.
I’d rather walk somewhere slowly with a camera than get there quickly without one.
Cooking & food
The kitchen is where I switch off.
Cooking is the other way I unwind. I like taking a recipe and making it my own, and a long, slow weekend cook that fills the house.
Food also turns out to be a good subject for practising with light, which is my excuse for photographing dinner.
DIY & making
Fixing, building, and taking things apart to see how they work.
Some of my favourite projects never go near a browser: jobs around the house, things built from scratch, and a lot of tinkering with Raspberry Pis. At the moment I’m building a small server operating system for them, with a setup wizard and a web control panel.
I like knowing how things work, and the quickest way to find out is usually to take one apart.
